How we planned our travel with the kids in Thailand

About a decade after our trip to Thailand as backpackers during a long trip in the east, we returned to Thailand during the summer of 2015 for a four-week family trip with our two kids.

We planned the trip so that it will be based on full days of excursion and will include family-friendly attractions: temples, palaces, museums, nature reserves, theme parks, beaches, folklore shows, markets and shopping centers and restaurants for all of us.

In advance, we ruled out attractions that were a problem for us because of harm to humans or animals. So, we gave up visiting the long-necked tribe near Chiang Rai, and attractions in the Chiang Mai area that included riding elephants, monkey shows or petting cats in Kanchanaburi and later giving up on our visit to the crocodile farm near Chiang Mai.

We planned the trip in Thailand to be based on several main centers from north to south, from which we took day trips, using taxis or organized tours.

Among the places we traveled by different means of transportation depending on the distance: domestic flight from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, local bus between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, domestic flight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, train to Hua Hin and bus back from Hua Hin to Bangkok. We ordered the domestic flights in advance and the local trips we booked a day or two in advance.

We booked the hotels in advance through the Booking.com site, so we could change the order almost until the last minute and upgrade it if necessary until the last minute without cancellation fees. In this way we were able to find excellent hotels in the places where we slept and when we did not like the hotel we ordered in Chiang Mai we changed the next day to another much better hotel.

We recommend buying the attractions tickets in Thailand, especially  the top rated tourist attractions in thailand in advance with Tiqets.com.

After months of planning and organizing for the trip in Thailand, we set out. After a long flight and landing in Bangkok, we continued our domestic flight to Chiang Rai, where we began our trip to Thailand as follows:

  • Three days of sightseeing in the Chiang Rai area and the Golden Triangle that included a visit to the White Temple, the Black House, the Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai Night Market and more.  Where to sleep: Nak Nakara hotel.

  • Weekend in and around the resort town of Hua Hin; which included Khao Takiab Beach, Night Market, Cicadas Market, Village Market Mall, New Water Park and Anna Nawa and Days Trip to the coastal Sanctuary of Fernburi, the city of Pachaburi temples and Palau Yao Falls and more …  Where to sleep: Banyan The Resort Hua Hin

Along with visiting the various attractions, Thailand's experiences included, of course, Thai food rich in flavors and shopping, which was a significant component of the current expenses of the trip. Thailand has plenty of shopping and cheap options. The impression is that Thailand is one big market that includes shops in the streets of the cities, street stalls, markets and large and modern shopping centers.

  • We ended the trip in Thailand in two wonderful days in Bangkok and we have already begun planning the next visit to this fascinating country. With its great food, friendly people, reasonable prices, tropical climate, fascinating culture, spectacular sandy beaches, hundreds of tropical islands, vibrant nightlife, archaeological sites, palaces, Buddhist temples and world heritage sites, Thailand is by far the most popular tourist destination in the southeast Asia.
